'Being There' starring Peter Sellers - a discussion with Stuart Warner
Thursday, February 21, 2013 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM (CST)
You are invited to a
discussion of the film Being There, led by
Professor Stuart Warner, Associate Professor of Philosophy
***PLUS, an Oscar ballot contest***
Join us as we welcome Professor Stuart Warner as he discusses the iconic film Being There, which appeared on the screen at the end of 1979. It features an extraordinary cast, including Melvyn Douglas, who won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, Peter Sellers, who receieved an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor, and Shirley MacLaine. At its core, the movie is a philosophical fable, which contains a reflection about what it is to be human, and about how easy it is to confuse appearance and reality, especially when they concern political life. It is simultaneously hilarious and dark. No movie could be more timely to discuss around the time of the Academy Awards.
Please note, during the lecture, we will see excerpts from the film, but not the film in its entirety. Being There is available on Amazon Instant Video (free to Prime members and $2.99 to others) and on Netflix DVD. If you haven't seen Being There, it is a must-see; if you have seen Being There, it a must see again.
And since we're getting so close to the Academy Awards ceremony, we're also going to have an Oscar ballot contest. Those who attend the discussion will be eligible for some great prizes:
1st prize: $30 gift certificate to AMC Theaters
2nd prize: a copy of Arnie Bernstein's Hollywood on Lake Michigan: 100 Years of Chicago & the Movies
3rd prize: a DVD copy of the deluxe edition of Being There
425 S. Wabash Ave.
